Not too long ago, I did a piece for The New Yorker. I attempted to visualize what it felt like to brainstorm. What’s interesting is that I had to draw many illustrations just to capture that singular experience. One drawing wouldn’t do. Not even a little bit.
And don’t get me started about what it’s like to brainstorm what it’s like to brainstorm. OK, you got me started. First, I present the piece I drew. At the bottom, I try to synthesize what it’s like to brainstorm brainstorming.
Enjoy. Or, hold on. Or, cheers.
And now, what it’s like to brainstorm what it’s like to brainstorm.
This was something I could only post on Substack, which is why I’m so happy to be here. And please. Don’t ask me what it was like to brainstorm what it was like to brainstorm what it was like to brainstorm. Because I just might try to give you an answer.
Totally share if this has tickled your brainstorm bone.
Totally subscribe if you haven’t yet!
And please, keep on brainstorming. The secret is to just keep going.
Thank you!

P.S. How does brainstorming feel to you?
Do you ever get a really, really, really great idea in the early waking moments of the morning, then 30 minutes later, drinking a morning coffee and struggling to remember what it was at all?
I thought, hey, I got an idea. I'll use my iPhone voice message. The next morning, I was back in the same place and wondered what the heck I was saying in the voice message. Dreams are much more coherent than the early morning spoken word.
My favorite is the one with the magnify glass. How often it feels like I’m looking for something so small to turn it into something big!
