I’m a big of your comics and now I’m a fan of your writing too! As someone who also wants to publish children’s books someday, this was extremely useful. What a great read!
How was it, working on so many edits and iterations based on different creative inputs? I’m sure it wasn’t easy, I can’t imagine changing and coming up with new ideas again and again, when you thought you’d already got it.
Thank you! And yes, the biggest and hardest lesson was having to redo my work after thinking I finally got it.
And it took discipline and I guess a bit of maturity to sit down each time and funnel all the input into something new. I didn't always do it well, but it involved trying to understand what my agent and editor really wanted and then coming up with my own way of making it happen. I got lucky that they gave me the chances to keep going.
Love this 😃 Thanks for walking us through your process, it's heart-warmingly real and human and a great reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other and doing the work 🩷
Thank you! And I think it definitely helped. It gave me some legitimacy, and I'm really lucky for it. And although it got me some initial attention, my work as a hopeful children's book writer and illustrator still had to speak for itself. (In general though, I am VERY lucky in so many ways to have made it this far.)
I will say, drawing cartoons every week, month after month and year after year, made me a much better writer and artist, and it taught me to work through rejection. I don't think I could have gone through the lengthier process of trying to sell a children's book if not for that previous experience.
The days of the week into a jumble is the perfect illustration of what Covid was like. Also I always enjoy your narratives. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
What a journey! I love this and will wait for Part 2 with great anticipation.
I appreciate it! I hope it will be worth the wait!

Kudos to you for keeping the bigger picture in mind and pushing through it. You’re an inspiration!
I’m looking forward to reading the book and sharing it with others

Wow, kudos to you for not giving up on yourself and your great idea, even if it wasn’t perfectly expressed at the start!

I appreciate it! One foot in front of the other! Also a great way to get your steps in
Your perseverance stuns me! I am impressed
Why thank you. It was either persevere or not get this book out into the world.
Great post! Very interesting. I'm Curious... do you think having cartoons in The New Yorker was a door-opener for agents or publishers?
