Hi All!
Hard to believe, but I’ve been writing and drawing my newsletter on Substack since March! It hasn’t quite been a year yet, but 2023 closing out seems like a milestone of some sort. Or maybe it’s that I’m on winter break and have the time and space to reflect.
Below is a little bit about me and a special section at the end for paid subscribers. I thank you all so much for reading and being here, and I especially appreciate the extra support from you generous people who are helping to make it financially possible for me to keep doing this. I am beyond grateful. If you aren’t yet a paid subscriber, and think that can be you, go for it!
For those of you who have found me recently, a little bit about myself:
I am a kindergarten teacher
I am a cartoonist for The New Yorker
My debut children’t book, A Story No One Has Ever Heard Before, just came out!
I am so lucky for the opportunity to juggle all of these professions, and they are only some of what make me who I am. Writing this newsletter is a whole new area that I am exploring. I used to love to write but had trouble finishing anything. Here, I get to explore, try things out, and combine illustrations, cartoon, and the written word.
One of my newsletters that I am most proud of, and that many others seem to relate to, is my piece on anxiety. This piece helped put me on the Substack “map” so to speak. I often process feelings and my lived experience through cartoons, and here I attempted to add some prose to the imagery. You can take a look here:
Another piece that I really like is about cats! These are the best cats I’ve ever drawn and ever may draw, and who doesn’t like - achoo! - cats?
I’m happy how this piece turned out as well. It’s about self-care, of which I have none. But that won’t stop me from writing about it!
I also connected with some new writers and artists and got to see another side to others that I already know.
Nishant Jain, The Sneaky Artist, is an illustrator and writer I’m excited to have connected with. The way he sees the world, the way he uses lines, and the way he expresses himself has been invaluable to me.
Everything IS amazing, with Mike Sowden! He’s been so kind and supportive as I’ve started my newslettering journey.
And so many cartoonists on here too!
I’m always in awe of Jason Chatfield’s art. He can do things I’ll never be able to do, which I respect and admire. It’s good to have people to learn from.
My partner convinced me to start up on substack after reading Zoe Si’s newsletter, so thank you Zoe! (And my partner!)
Liza Donnely has a wonderful and refreshing style and voice. Hilary is hilarious, Liana is a legend, and Sofia rocks. A whole bunch of cartoonists get together for Toonstack, a cartoon newsletter!
There are so many more newsletters I try to keep up with, and I definitely hope to keep sharing the work of others! These are only a few! There’s just so much to read!
But. If you’re here for the secrets of the universe, I’ve got that too! Well, secrets to my universe, at least. Here we go!
