This past kindergarten school year, amid the tumult of report cards, big emotions, and final culminations, my wonderful co-teacher bought me an end-of-year present.
I’m easy to shop for (you guessed it: coffee and art supplies) so she went with a nice Moleskine sketchbook. She accidentally (or did I send her the wrong link?) ordered an extra large one by mistake, which she nevertheless gave me along with another regular sized sketchbook as well, since she is so nice.
So there I was, with two sketchbooks, one of which boggles the mind.
I mean, look at it! This sketchbook is gigantic! It barely fit in this Substack.

So here I am, with a giant sketchbook, no endorsement deals, and a certain amount of uncertainty as to where to go next. But I think I’ve figured it out…
What I can do with a Giant Moleskine Sketchbook
I’m not intimidated at all, and definitely not procrastinating from doing important things like finishing my next picture book. Not at all. And you’re not reading this while pushing off work either. For sure not. We’re not all avoiding the inevitabilities of life together. We wouldn’t do that.
Also, what the heck do I draw in this giant sketchbook? Do I take it around with me to cafes? Doodle in it on the subway? See if they let me into a museum with it? Or wait for that Moleskine $$$ to roll in?
Suggestions welcome, and stay tuned!
Thanks for being here,
Avi
P.S. I still have some available hand-drawn originals of this limited run, if you need some inspiration to get yourself going or are looking for a gift to give to a frenemy.
I have that one too! I used it when I did an art residency on Vancouver trains. It's super fun to sit behind that giant book cover and leave people wondering what's going on. I love that it looks exactly like the small sketchbooks. 😂
How about: 🐘, periodic table of the elements, sequoia, Babe the Blue ox, a really large paper clip, a life size iguana, illustrated biography on one page, dream visioning, a large cup of coffee.
