I have that one too! I used it when I did an art residency on Vancouver trains. It's super fun to sit behind that giant book cover and leave people wondering what's going on. I love that it looks exactly like the small sketchbooks. 😂
How about: 🐘, periodic table of the elements, sequoia, Babe the Blue ox, a really large paper clip, a life size iguana, illustrated biography on one page, dream visioning, a large cup of coffee.
I think the age of social media has put too much pressure on us to make our sketchbooks beautiful and perfect. I say just treat it like any other sketchbook. But maybe draw bigger.
That being said, I fully understand the desire for sketchbooks to have a theme as if they were a whole and complete story in and of themselves. But not very easy in practice.
If you are really put off by the size, you could always use a ruler to divide the pages into little blocks to draw in. Then you get many more mini-pages in there!
Suggestion for moleskin maximus: illustrate all your sins and then get a book deal cuz I for sure would buy it. If you are not a big sinner ask Substack folks to share their sins. They, in turn would then want to buy your illustrated sinners book, too. You could have a contest for Best Title and drum up pre-orders. Did I miss my calling?
Also, I still remember my confession as a 7 year old in my Catholic school weekly meet and purge with Father Blah Blah. I said the same thing every week: bless me father I have sinned. I teased my brother. I disobeyed my mother and father. I ate a lot of chocolate cake and threw up. ( Ever my week I ate too much of something) Illustrating the priest’s face listening to all these sins might be a route to go as well. I’m surprised his rolling eyeballs didn’t roll beneath the curtain beneath my bent knees. I think your ability to enter a kid’s world could also illustrate a kid’s Illustrated book of sins. Sort of like your “Saying Goodbye” post earlier summing up what you had learned from your year of teaching kindergartners. “How to run uphill backwards.”

Ahh, the mysterious giant sketchbook, I like it. And yes, I can’t tell if the sketchbook is big or I am tiny!
Find yourself a giant pen and minds will explode!
It’ll be a good insight into what it must actually feel like to be one of my kindergarten students!
😅

Hahah, these are great.
Clearly you must draw a normal sized moleskin.
Genius

Yes, I agree. The more I think about it the less I’ll create

Well I for one, can't wait to see where your imagination takes you in that car door of a sketchbook :) (and yes, I am at work ;) lol)
We’ll see what happens, but I took the plastic off the notebook so I’m one step closer to using it

True! Each page is a full regular sized Moleskine

Also, Moleskine Maximus!!
The Illustrated Sinners Book sounds amazing and would definitely be about how everything is my fault.

Still unpacking this... and yes, I'm now toying with the idea of a kids book about a kid with a giant notebook.
Hahaha….I love this…all great uses of a giant sketchbook. Camping, hang gliding and relaxing are my faves.
Thank you!
How about a corner of the Empire State building at 1:1 scale?
Haha, I need to seriously consider this one
I love these cartoons! Where can I see more of your work?
Thank you so much! I’m here, on instagram (sigh) and every so often in The New Yorker!
Can't even imagine how expensive that sketchbook is 🤯
I found a black one outside a pub in 2017.
Loved it. All good ideas! Great cartoons.
Hilarious! Thanks for the laugh.
For sure!!
Avi, you are great!
Aww I try
You covered a lot of possibilities. I’d be ensnared by indecision.
YUP!
